You should apply for Social Security disability benefits as soon as you become disabled. The disability process can be quite confusing, therefore there are some things you should know before applying. There are two types of benefits to consider.
The first is Social Security Disability Benefits (SSDI) which is meant to replace an income for a disabled individual. The second program is Supplemental Security Income (SSI) which is based on financial need.
How to Qualify
There are requirements an applicant must meet to be able to qualify for SSDI. To qualify for SSDI benefits, you have to fall under an earnings per month threshold, which the Social Security Administration refers to as Substantial Gainful Activity (SGA).
There are also medical requirements which will be determined by the Blue Book. To be approved for SSDI benefits, you must have a condition that is so severe that it prevents you from performing your daily living activities, including work. Your will need to provide substantial evidence in the form of medical records to support your claim.
Evidence Needed
To apply for disability benefits you will need personal information and medical evidence ready. You will need:
- Your Social Security Number
- Birth Certificate
- Doctor’s Notes
- Lab Test
- Work History
You can apply for SSDI benefits online or you can apply in person at your local SSA office.
