Now that people getting Social Security know they'll be getting more money in 2024, the next thing to figure out is when that money will actually show up. The Social Security Administration recently shared the payment schedule for 2024, and it follows the same routine as always.
In October 2023, the SSA announced a 3.2% increase in the cost of living for 2024. This means the monthly averages for each type of Social Security benefit saw an increase of 3.2% starting in January 2024.
Here’s a breakdown of exactly how much each type of Social Security benefit increased from 2023 to 2024 thanks to the 3.2% COLA:
- The maximum monthly Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefit payment increased by $195 to be $3,822 for eligible individuals in 2024.
- The maximum monthly Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefit payment increased by $29 to be $943 for eligible individuals, and increased $44 to be $1,415 for eligible couples in 2024.
- The average monthly survivor benefit increased by approximately $47 to be $1,505 in 2024.
- The average monthly retirement benefit increased by $57.39, based on the average of $1,793.51 in September 2023.
Even though the 3.2% increase was a lot less than the 8.7% we saw for 2023, it's still higher than the 2.6% average over the past couple of decades.
Here's how the payment schedule for 2024 works, especially for those receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI): SSI beneficiaries get two payments in March, June, September, and December. They won't get any money in January, April, July, and October. The remaining months—February, May, August, and November—will have just one payment.
Here are the important dates to remember for getting payments in 2024:
January 2024
- Friday, December 29, 2023*: SSI beneficiaries get their January 2024 checks.
- Wednesday, January 3: Social Security beneficiaries who filed for benefits before May 1997 get their checks.
- Wednesday, January 10: Social Security beneficiaries whose date of birth falls between the 1st and the 10th of their birth month receive their January 2024 payment.
- Wednesday, January 17: Social Security beneficiaries whose date of birth falls between the 11th and the 20th of their birth month receive their January 2024 payment.
- Wednesday, January 24: Social Security beneficiaries whose date of birth falls between the 21st and the 31st of their birth month receive their January 2024 payment.
*Note: Since SSI checks are sent out by the SSA on the 1st of every month, and January 1, 2024 fell on a holiday, the SSA sent out January 2024 SSI payments on December 29, 2023.
